Outline
Outline

This is a one-day seminar, presented by Stan, and covers the topics relevant to legal professionals. Covering topics that include the vital mistakes accident reconstruction experts make repeatedly, new research and emerging technologies, cross examination and many "rule-of-thumb" techniques for detecting errors in the work of experts, this course is designed to enhance the use and cross-examination of accident reconstruction experts in trials and hearings.

In the past, experts were typically appointed on the strength of their "name in the industry" and on account of their tertiary qualification. This presentation will reveal the weaknesses of this approach, illustrate the vital mistakes made by some of the best-known experts in the industry and will help attendees identify weaknesses in the submissions of experts - whether they have appointed them or are required to cross-examine them.

This is a must-attend seminar that is specifically geared towards being of maximum benefit to attendees in court and trial settings.

This course has been designed to enable attendees to be able to proceed to an accident scene, to be able to arrive, identify role-players present, understand their roles, responsibilities and functions, their authority and protocols. The attendee will learn what is important or vital to each of these role-players, how to interact with them without causing friction or confrontation and why they act in a particular way.

Attendees will then learn about all the aspects of preparation for the at-scene investigation from a documentation and/or record perspective, will know what information is vital to his or her preparation for later testimony in trials and hearings and what information forms a vital component of accident investigation.

Next, they will learn how to identify, record and document evidence, based on a specific protocol, designed to enable investigators never to overlook anything, to stand up against scrutiny in courts or hearings and to establish themselves as independent, unbiased and reliable.

Attendees will learn how to follow a pre-set photographic protocol that will include all aspects of virtually any road traffic collision scene, what equipment they should have or use to achieve this level of achievement and what specific features each piece of equipment should contain.

Attendees will be exposed to practical experience in the photography of vehicles and scenes, the measurement of accident scenes to a level of detail beyond anything currently used in the official services in South Africa and they will learn a wide variety of "tricks of the trade" for more effective at-scene investigations.

As part of their course, students will receive a copy of the Accident Investigation Manual authored by Stan Bezuidenhout, as well as a copy of the well-known Road Safety Manual for Commercial Vehicles and Buses.

After three days of training, you will be certified and will be able to investigate an accident scene on your own.

Who should attend
Who should attend
This one-day seminar will benefit Attorneys, Advocates, Prosecutors, Magistrates and even Judges and even company litigation and negotiation representatives.
This course will benefit all parties that have a vested interest in road traffic collisions. The content will be of benefit to anyone who could ever have cause or reason to investigate or document/record a road traffic collision scene, including (but not limited to) Police and Traffic Officers, Medical Rescue Personnel, Tow Truck Operators, Insurance Assessors, Fleet Managers, Operational Managers and Loss Control Officers.

Lawyers, Advocates, Magistrates and even Judges could also benefit from this course, since the protocols covered in these courses will provide a very strong base of comparison and enable any person who attended them to immediately identify weaknesses or flaws in investigative work done by others. Private individuals, insurance loss adjusters, assessors and/or vehicle/fleet owners or their representatives, private investigators and even Fire Fighters will be well served to understand and have training in the proper handling of evidence, accident scenes and crime scenes.
